Sree Narayana Guru (1856-1928)



  • Father of kerala renaissance
  • He was born on 20 August 1856 in the village of Chempazhanthy near Thiruvananthapuram. (Malayalam era 1032, Chingam)
  • His childhood name was Narayanan( Nanu)
  • Parents: Madan Asaan and Kuttiyamma. 
  • Name of his house: Vayalvaaram Veedu. 
  • Sree Narayana Guru started a school at  Anchuthengu (1881)
  • Guru learned Hadayoga Vidya from Thycadu Ayya
  • He attained enlightenment in Pillathadam Cave on Maruthwamala in Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu.
     
  • The historical Aruvippuram prahishta was done by Guru in 1888 and it was the first temple consecrated by Sree Narayana Guru.
  • In some places, he installed a ‘mirror’ instead of the image or idol of any deity to convey the message that ‘You are yourself  God!’
  • The Mirror as idol are at : Kalavancode, Ullala, Vechoor, Karamukk and Murukkumpuzha
  • In 1927 he consecrated first mirror at Kalavancode temple with the message “Om Shanthi” written in the surface of the mirror.  
  • Guru consecrated a nilavilakku as idol in Vilakkambalam in Karamukku, Trissur in 1920.  
  • Dr.Palpu called  Sree Narayana Guru : Periya Swami
  • Founded Sivagiri Mutt in 1904
  • The motto of Aluva Advaitha Ashramam : Om Sahodaryam Sarvatra (All human beings are equal in the eyes of  God)
  • He gave the message ‘‘One caste, One Religion, One God for Man’’ at a conference held at the Advaitashrama in 1915
  • Guru founded Sanskrit school at Aluva in 1916.

  • 'Aruvippuram Kshetra Yogam' has been registered as 'SNDP'
  • The first and Permanent president of SNDP : Sree Narayana Guru
  • The first Secretary of SNDP : Kumaranasan
  • First Vice President  of SNDP: Dr.palpu
  • SNDP published  Vivekodayam journal in 1904 ( founder Kumaranasan) But now it is replaced by Yoganadam.
  • SNDP Yogam had its first Annual General Body meeting at Aruvipuram  in Feb 1904.
